As an important energy exporter in the Southeast Asian region, Laos is accelerating its regional power grid interconnection strategy with its rich hydropower resources, and its strategic position as the "Southeast Asian Battery" is increasingly prominent. The latest market data shows that Laos' hydropower export prices have reached a three-year low, but export volumes have reached a historic high. Laos Hydropower Export Prices Hit Three-Year Low, While Export Volumes Reach Record High
According to the latest August 2026 energy market report released by the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Laos, Laos' hydropower export prices decreased by 23.5% compared to the same period last year, reaching the lowest point in nearly three years. However, notably, hydropower export volume increased by 18% year-on-year, reaching a historic high. Behind this seemingly contradictory data is the direct reflection of Laos' energy strategy adjustment and changes in regional energy demand.
Mr. Somsay Sisoulith, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines of Laos, said in an interview: "We are implementing a more flexible energy export strategy, combining long-term contracts with spot markets to ensure the stability of energy exports while flexibly responding to regional market fluctuations. In the first half of 2026, Laos' electricity exports reached $820 million, an 18% increase year-on-year, which fully proves that our strategic adjustment is correct."
Regional Power Grid Interconnection Accelerates, Strategic Position of "Southeast Asian Battery" Becomes Prominent
In recent years, Laos has vigorously promoted regional power grid interconnection projects and has now achieved grid connections with countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. In August 2026, the fourth Laos-Thailand high-voltage transmission line was officially put into operation, increasing Laos' power transmission capacity by 500 megawatts, further consolidating Laos' position as a regional energy hub.
Mr. Chatchai Pongchai, Director of the ASEAN Energy Center, pointed out: "Laos has abundant water energy resources with an annual power generation capacity of up to 300 billion kWh, but the current development and utilization rate is less than 40%. With the acceleration of regional power grid interconnection, Laos will become an important 'green battery' in the Southeast Asian region, not only meeting the regional electricity demand but also providing important support during energy shortages."
